We’ve all heard of a Sloppy Joe but what is the world is a Hula Joe? I was ready to find out! Rachael Ray’s favorite thing is a good burger so it was only fitting that she re did the sloppy joe and turned it into a Hula Joe. Here’s how it went!
Hula Joes – Recipe by Rachael Ray
Ingredients – *Revised to fit my kitchen*
- 1 tablespoon EVOO - Extra Virgin Olive Oil
- 1/4 pound turkey bacon
- 1 1/2 pounds ground turkey
- 1 sweet onion, such as Maui or Vidalia, finely chopped
- 2 to 3 cloves garlic, finely chopped or grated
- 3 tablespoons brown sugar
- 3 tablespoons red wine vinegar
- 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
- 1 cup tomato sauce
- 1 cup canned crushed pineapple
- Salt and ground black pepper
- 4 Kaiser rolls
- 1 cup shredded yellow cheddar cheese
Directions
Place a large skillet over medium-high heat with one turn of the pan of EVOO, about 1 tablespoon. Cook the ground turkey until brown and cooked through, about 10 minutes.
Then add the onion and garlic to the pan and cook until soft, about 5-6 minutes.
Meanwhile I choose to cook turkey bacon strips in the microwave, otherwise visit Rachael Ray’s recipe and see her directions which included first cooking the bacon in the pan and using the fat. (Eeww)
While the turkey and onions are cooking, in a small bowl, mix together the brown sugar,
red wine vinegar,
Worcestershire sauce
and finally the tomato sauce. Then mix until well blended.
Pour tomato sauce mixture into the skillet with the turkey bacon diced, ground turkey and onion, cook about a minute.
Then stir in pineapple. Season with salt and pepper to taste. **I actually just said screw the 1 cup of fresh pineapples I just threw the WHOLE HUGE can in there. I didn’t drain the can either but it was still delicious!**
You can also use fresh chopped pineapple but I mean really? You want me to cup up a pineapple? I just learned how to chop a melon! Thank you YouTube! The things you can learn on there!
While the filling is cooking, split open the rolls and toast them under the broiler. Be careful not to burn them!
To serve, place a bun bottom on a plate with a scoop of Hula Joe mixture and a sprinkling of cheese. Top with the bun cap and serve!!
I decided that I was going to use one bun and make two open faced Hula Joes. Pesky flash..
Here it is with no flash..
Nom, nom, nom.. That was sooooooo good!
So like I said I made some changes for my kitchen. Rachael Ray uses ground pork, bacon with the fat, fresh chopped pineapple and more fresh chopped pineapple. I wasn’t about to spend $$ on a pineapple when I have it so conveniently located in a can!
And that is your recipe for today!
I made you hungry at 9:40am PST! :)
