Real talk today people.. And it's all about my JAW!
So over the course of the past two possibly three months I've seen 5 orthodontists and 2 oral surgeons for consults on my jaw and teeth. Yes that's 7 sets of x-rays, photos, mouth photos, non-smiling photos and one set of molds..
Yes when I smile you only see my top teeth and let's face it we are our worst critic. I have been told since I was 15 that I need to get orthognathic surgery on my jaw to fix it. I opted not to do it when I was 15 because who seriously wants to get their jaw broken and put back together and then wired shut for month? NO way jose!
Well fast forward till today, I had 6 brackets (braces) instead of the surgery and full braces when I was 16. I had them for 6 months and TaDa! Pretty aligned top teeth = still crooked bottom teeth.
Teeth move people.. Mine just have a mind of their own. I've noticed over the past few years that my bottom teeth have started to move and poke out. Blah.. Ugh.. Just saying it here on my blog makes me mad.. My top teeth moved as well even though I wear my retainer.
I'm sure you all want to look at my teeth now - but I don't have balls to show you my bite photos as they scare me.. But one day I might show you all...
Here's my case:
I have a Class III Malocclusion - Which means my teeth in the back don't line up where they should
Cross Bite - Which means my teeth don't overlap correctly or something, it's due to my big bottom jaw
Open Bite - Because of the other shit, my teeth don't close in the front
Then let's add in that my jaw is like 5mm too big on the bottom, my top jaw is a few mm too small.
Which means double jaw surgery!
I can't bite into a salami sandwich to save my life.. I literally bite and pull all the salami out at once.. Apply that to everything else that requires a nice clean bite to food.. I can't do it.
I really have no idea what to do. I just want straight teeth - I don't know if I have it in me to get jaw surgery. I advise you possibly to see what it entails by Google searching it, but really I wouldn't it's scary.
It's like a 4-6 week recovery but really it's months before it's better. Ugh..
I'm posting this today because I've met and heard from people who have known someone who had it
I'm wondering have any of you fabulous readers experienced this first hand?
I've read other ortho-jaw blogs but I don't know those people yet and I know you girls
So I want to see if you have had it done? Give me some advise!
My only other option is to sacrifice having a crooked jaw and the orthodontist will try to make them as good as perfect as they can but it'll never be PERFECT..
Advise? Help? Suggestions?

15 Lovely Notes:
I haven't had surgery on my jaw, but I do know about teeth moving out of place. I'm pretty sure my orthodontist messed up my teeth, along with a stupid dentist, because my bite is totally whacked. I haven't worn my retainers in over a year, except a few nights, and my teeth hardly fit in them any more. I want to get my teeth fixed, and I would, if braces weren't so darn expensive!
I haven't had the surgery but I did have my mouth wired shut for a month (to get my braces off) It really wasn't that bad. You can still talk you just can't eat anything. Smoothies will be your best friend. Anyway I say get the surgery now before your wedding!
Hey, I found you blog when you left a comment on mine, so I decided to follow you. I'm having pretty much the exact same surgery as your for literally the exact same thing. I have an underbite, crossbite, and open bite, and my bottom jaw is much more spacious than the top, Weird isn't it?
I've also been youtubing about this and blogging.
I should have been having surgery in about 2 months but my orthodontist didn't decompensate my top jaw properly and now I have to wait a bit longer.
I've been Preparing for surgery for about a year.
Another weird thing, I had braces and 15 but was afraid to have jaw surgery, so I put it off as long as I could lol.
Anyway back to today, the thing that sucks is that timelines aren't realistic. I was told that I would be surgery ready in Dec2011 and be out of braces a few months later. Once I had the braces on that changed after every adjustment and now I'm looking at 2013 to have my braces off and everything done.
Something thats super important to know is the cause of your bite problem. With our bite issues its usually due to tongue thrusting, which in the long run could cause your bite to relapse again, so on top of everything, I have in the past and will have to all over again after surgery, see a speech therapist.
Best of luck Jenn. Also send me an email if you want to chat about jaw stuff. terraiarossi@gmail.com
OUCH!! I hope all goes well!
I've never had jaw surgery so sadly I'm not much help. But I hope everything goes well. I'll be thinking of you...
Oh girl. I had braces in the 6th grade and a permanent retainer and now one of my teeth on the bottom has moved. I hate it, but we don't have dental insurance and I don't have that kind of money to shell out to fix one tooth. Hopefully you'll find a simple, quick alternative than surgery.
Oh my gosh.. that sounds painful!
I don't know if I could go through with that!
I have no idea about any of this but sounds painful but you can do it! Good luck!
I need it too, but I just don't have the balls to do it. Like you though, it makes me mad just thinking about my bite and my teeth. I want them to be perfect, but I'm scared of what will make them perfect!
I'd say do it now before you big day where you will want to smile a lot on that amazing wedding!!! :)
If it's really getting in the way of eating and your daily life then I say do it. From photos though, you'd never know that your teeth weren't straight because I've never noticed at all!!
I know nothing about this, but it sounds scary. Good luck if you decide to move fwd
my kids had some contraption that literally pulled their jaw forward and messed with the teeth...i had to use a key to crank it everyday....can that not straighten part of the prob?
My daughter had a very similar issue and had jaw surgery. She had the open bite and until after the surgery had never been able to bite a sandwich. The surgery was a success and I she is glad she had it. Wish you lot's of good things as you move forward.
I had a severe underbite to the point it was hard to eat and I looked weird got made fun of in grade school and so on... went to 2 orthodontist and a bunch of specialist and got it done 4 years ago. I am very happy with the results and recovery was hard on me cause i loved food and such and I lived off jamba juice for a month lol over all it was well worth it!
