To My Anonymous Commenter

Good Morning Ladies,
While normally I'm so happy to wake up, start my day by turning off my alarm, check emails, read your sweet comments from the night or morning and get ready for the gym.  That was not the case today.  No today I woke up having an asthma attack at 5am, so while giving myself a breathing treatment I read my emails.  I come across sweet comments left by two of my favorie bloggers, then notice I have an anonymous one, as I open it I was pretty sure it was spam.  Not the case.. here's what I see,

I'm not quite sure what you meant when you called using a tripod the "the ultimate Chinese thing to do". Sounds a little racist and ignorant to me.
Here's where I remind you that this is my blog where I can write whatever I want, but heres the thing Mr. or Mrs. Anonymous...

I'm half Chinese!
But I'm sorry did I need to tell you that? Oh wait I did, it's the only thing I mention in my About Me tab that tells you to read more about me and my family here in this post. I'm sure you also failed to look at that.  Maybe next time when you want to leave an anonymous comment telling me that I'm racist and ignorant because I said that I brought my tripod to take photos at my girlfriends birthday, saying it was the Ultimate Chinese thing to do.  Well for me and my family, it is.

My mom has 6 siblings including herself, 1 sister and 4 brothers.  All of whom at family functions, break out a SLR, tripod, video camera and laptop because they love to take photos to document our lives.  Well that's where I say it's the ultimate Chinese thing to do.  When I go over my other side of the family who are German I don't see that, sure they have a camera or two but my Chinese family members are all about it.  For that I wouldn't change that for the world, because at my graduation, prom, birthdays, holidays, vacations whatever else I have a life long memory lasting in photographs and videos.

Not to mention the fact that I'm a second generation family member to a Fong family, who's grandfather was detained at Angel Island for over 3 months while the American Soldiers integrated him and asked him millions of questions day after day as to why he wanted to come to America.  Want proof? We have all the documents and questions that they ask.  All of which I learned even more about in my Asian American Studies classes that I took while attending college, oh ya did I mention that I'm only about 8 credits away from having Asian American Studies as my minor? Or that I speak Cantonese? That I went to Chinese School for 5 summers while in grade school so I could learn more about my culture apart from what I already learn from my Gong Gong (That's grandpa for the daughter's children, yes that's right if your a son of the parents you call them Ye Ye) and Po Po (Grandma for the daughter's children).

I don't have to continue on about how Chinese I am and how ignorant or racist you now sound because like so many in my life, I've been in the situation where I have people talking about Chinese or Asian American's in front of my face, which you wouldn't believe the degree to which some people talk about us, all the while I know to myself they think "Oh well there's no Asian's or Chinese in the room so I can talk about this", well sorry to tell you, your looking at a blond haired, hazel eyed girl who is half Chinese and loves every part about it.

Sorry to all of you sweet girls who leave me such nice comments and know because you've read my blog that I'm a Happa Girl because this isn't directed to you, this is directed to the Anonymous person who wants to try to call me a racist and ignorant person for using Chinese in that term.

Now back to our regularly scheduled program I'll be posting something "normal" aka not venting and basically telling someone off in a little bit.

I received an ignorant anonymous comment about a week ago and it INFURIATED me. They are so tough, yet they can't leave there name and own what they write. At least we own what we write!!
My cousins are half Japanese (they live in Alameda, CA actually) and I'm sure have lots of "japanese"-like things they do.
I hate that this person made you feel like you needed to defend yourself. But you definitely showed them who was ignorant!
Have a better day!

I don't think the comment seemed *that* harsh. I mean I know you have a natural tendency to become defensive but it's not like they were all "OMG you're so racist I'm so offended!!" Anyway, I don't think your comment was racist or ignorant (I had already read your about me and knew you were half Chinese so I got where you were coming from). Just another opinion here :)

Wow, this is YOUR blog, you can write whatever you want on here!!! My gawsh. And I love your little comment about your family and their nature, it's a sweet "stereotype" or whatever you want to call it, not racist or ignorant at all!

I love the info about your background and all that you know about your heritage and culture. You're amazing!

Happy Tuesday, girl :-)

hahaah. Girl I LOVE it!!! You make me laugh!! I get so sick and tired of the "racist" card. And you hit the nail on the head when you said if the reader really cared or was interested enough in your blog then they would have known you were half chinese....this was one of the first things I learned about you!

Have a great day!

Oh my goodness! Jenn, you don't need to defend yourself to this fake person anyway! Obviously they're too ashamed to say who they are. If they knew anything about your blog, they would know you're half chinese! This is YOUR blog and you can say what you'd like! This is why I wish you had to accept people's request to be a follower like on facebook because then you could monitor who reads and comments. People just blow my mind sometime. Try and have a good day pretty lady! xox

Oh my goodness, people can be so rude and crazy! Write whatever the heck you want on here and don't pay any attention to those weirdos. You have such a cute blog and I know I speak for so many of us when I say, KEEP UP THE GREAT WORK!

Very well said! And honestly. I don't think that anonymous poster even deserved any explanation from you...but I sure did learn a lot!

I love reading your blog and seeing all that you do :) Don't stop!!

I am sorry you had to deal with that comment so early in the morning! Ugh, not cool. I hate when people jump to conclusions, and on your own blog? Last place that's needed. Checked out your family post and your family is adorable. Hope the asthma is under control now too!

It really is too bad that some people feel the need to do this. You are too nice to be accused of these things :)

You are absolutely right...if anonymous cared so much about your blog and was a true reader then she would know that you are half chinese. That is what makes you unique and it's one of the biggest things I remember about you. Besides you have it posted on your blog and you've talked about it before!

I've never understood why people even bother hiding behind "anonymous" when commenting.

Jennie said...

Great response!!! I try to ignore people like that...because they are the ignorant ones!

tara said...

ugh. how annoying. great response! you dont really need to defend yourself though. its your blog, you can say whatever you want!

It's usually the anonymous ones that have nothing good to say. I think it's super-cowardly. I mean, if their comments had any merit, why not use your name? Good for you for standing up for yourself. It only proved who the truly ignorant one was.

Nicci said...

haha, people should really read info before the comment. duh. It's always from the ppl who can't show their face.

Good post!! I hate it when random people say rude things on my blog. What you have to say it your business and not anyone elses! Good for you for responding! You are a strong, confident person, you go girl!!! xo
